Bosch makes a nice newer model for about $120 at thebusdepot.com. The fuel pumps on both my D-jet Volvo 1800 s (same general setup as his 914) failed and have been replaced with these. Tell him he'd be replacing crap with crap if he goes for the $400 original style.

There are 8 bunks in the loft of the camp. Here is the write-up I sent out to the Kennebec Valley District email list after I visited the Troop 150 Memorial Scout Camp last summer: Directions to the camp and how to reserve the camp for your unit are under “The Memorial Scout Camp” link. Camp use fee: There is no fee. It is FREE. I’m sure they’d accept a donation from you though. See the Contact link on the website for where to send a donation to. Your newsletter editor spent three days and two nights at the camp July 6-8 on the shore of Spectacle Pond in Osborn, Maine (Delorme Map 24, B4). This is in a wilderness setting, roughly 5.5 miles down an active logging road from State Route 9 (aka “The Airline”), about 30 miles east of Bangor. What is available for your unit to use (see the photo gallery on the camp website): Adam’s Cabin (named in memory of Adam Beggs): 20 by 20 ft cabin with an open room on the main level and a half-loft accessible by ladder. On the main level is a cooking bench with a heat-resistant ceramic/stone tile top, two trestle tables with bench seating for 8. The table tops are also ceramic/stone tile for easy cleaning. A wood stove for colder weather. Camp-width screened-in front porch facing Spectacle Pond. There are more chairs stacked on the porch. Camp-width deck with BBQ at the back. In the loft there are 8 plywood bunks. There is shelving in the cooking area with a 2 burner propane stove, some lanterns, several pots/pans, two or three cast iron skillets, and three 12 inch dutch ovens. In front of the cabin are two picnic tables, one new and one older, a fire ring with permanent tripod/chain and what I believe is a bean-hole bean pit covered with a steel plate. There are 7 canoes available for use. Paddles and PFDs for the canoes are stored on the porch in wooden boxes (paddles) and plastic bins (PFDs). Everything needs to be properly dried-out before being put back in the boxes/bins. The outhouse is located behind the cabin. Joe Beggs Waterfront (former camp owner who passed away last year and was Adam’s grandfather): Waterfront is rocky with a 20 ft dock. No jumping/diving! Water is only knee deep at the end of the dock. I waded out a good 75 feet and it was only 3 ft deep! Water is kind of brownish color as can be expected due to the lake being surrounded by evergreens and the resulting tannin leaching into the water. Filtering the water does not eliminate the tannin. Water would be alright for cleaning, but probably not drinking even after filtration (unless you can get past the water being brown). The Lakes of Maine website (http://www.lakesofmaine.org) offers info on most lakes in the state. If you call-up the map of the pond at http://www.lakesofmaine.org/data/maps/4450.jpg, you’ll see a row of 4’s going out nearly half-way across the lake. Follow these back to the right (east) shore and I think that’s approximately where the camp is located, just north of the inlet of the lake. According to the information page on the lake (http://www.lakesofmaine.org/lake-overview.html?m=4450), fish include: trout, pickerel, sunfish and perch (white and yellow). Goodwin Campsite (named for Craig Goodwin): Located on the opposite side of the outhouse from the cabin. Fire ring, picnic table and I’m told tenting available for 20. It didn’t look that big to me. I suppose if you used the parking area across the camp road for overflow, it could hold 20. Just park your vehicles closer to the camp. When you make a reservation, you will be reminded to bring your own drinking water and propane. This also means if you want to use the BBQ, you need to bring a 20 lb cylinder. Please pack-out your trash. Nearest store: Aurora General Store, about 4 miles before the turn-off onto Spectacle Pond Rd and 10 miles away from the camp. Additional Directional Aids: If you own a GPS use the coordinates provided on the website. Also, plug them into Google Maps and use the Street View feature at the point where you turn off Route 9 onto Spectacle Pond Rd to have an idea in advance what you’re watching for. If you’re unit has been to Camp Roosevelt, act like you’re going to that camp (I-395 to the end, go south on US Route 1 until you reach Route 46. Follow Route 46 north to East Eddington. Continue past the entrance to Roosevelt and follow Route 46 to the end (about a half-mile) where it intersects Route 9. Follow Route 9 east for just over 20 miles. If you travel The Airline a lot, you may have noticed that it has mile markers, though most of the markers aren’t as prominent as those on the interstate. In the direction on the website, it mentions “When you see the rusty guardrails, you're getting close...” This section of the Airline is known as “The Whaleback”. About two-tenths of a mile past mile marker 224 is an overlook to the north. Using this as a reference, you are about a mile from the turn-off. If you spot mile marker 225 (less prominent than 224 for some reason), you are just two-tenths of a mile from the turn-off onto Spectacle Pond Rd. Like all active logging roads, please keep to the right. Keep your speed prudent. There is the potential for LARGE wildlife you don’t want to hit. Watch for logging trucks, which always have the right-of-way. You’re on private property that the public is allowed to access as long as you remember these rules. Mile markers 1 through 3 were well marked when I went out. I did not see mile marker 4 on the way in or out. Mile marker 5, which is on a bolder next to the road, is very faded, but it’s my understanding that is in the process of being repainted. The road for the camp is about four-tenths of a mile after the 5 mile mark. Do not be fooled by Kingman’s Beach Rd. This is not the turn and is four-tenths of a mile BEFORE the 5 mile mark. If you reach the pond’s inlet bridge, you’ve gone a quarter mile past the camp road. The camp road entrance will have several camp signs including Lawrence and MSC (Memorial Scout Camp). The actual drive-way for the camp is about a quarter mile in on the left and has a large “Memorial Scout Camp” sign. When you reach the camp, please do not park on the road proper as this road is also an access road for another 4 camps past the scout camp. Personal observations: Very quiet. Lots of wildlife. I did not get out on the water other than to wade due to the whitecaps the entire time I was there and I’m not good with a canoe, even if I could lift the large 18 footers provided alone. My center of gravity is too high. I’m good at flipping them (and kayaks). Basically, I enjoyed just sitting back, reading and watching the wildlife for a couple days. Please remind your scouts to respect others’ properties. When you see the state of the camp next door, you’ll understand as it screams with its temptations to be explored as it hasn’t been well kept-up. Great place for a weekend get-away, but the waterfront will pose you a challenge to lay-out learner, beginner and swimmer’s areas due to how far out it remains shallow. Several wood/camp roads for hiking. Good base camp to explore other areas Downeast. You can’t beat the price either. This group also offers camperships, two of which were awarded to scouts in our district this past spring. See the camp’s website for details. In the loft, there are 4 single bunks and two sets of bunk beds. The top bunks on these only provide 2 feet of clearance below rafter beams. Scouts who wind-up on these will need to be careful when they sit-up in the morning or they may wind-up with a good bonk to the head. I’ve slept on hardwood floors that seem to have more give then these plywood bunks (which are about a year old).
