IN SEARCH OF: Matt and I are looking for a camp for our son, he is 12. I figured the best people to ask would be PC people. We are in MN but willing to send him...

Check out Camp Mondamin for boys in Western North Carolina. Disclaimer: I do NOT work there and I do NOT have kids, but I work in the outdoors and have always heard good things about them. Also camp Manito-Wish in Wisconsin.

Langston/north waters. It's a wilderness canoe camp in N Canada. I went when I was 13/14 & 18. Amazing times, lifelong memories. John Stang was my trip leader! 6 years later we were both students at PC

Camp Unalayee in Northern CA. http://unalayee-summer-camp.com/ My backpacking experiences there led me to Prescott College. My kids grew up there and worked as counselors until recently. Wonderful community, giving kids the chance to explore all the typical camp stuff: archery, lake activities, nature lore, rock climbing - and how to walk gently in the world.

We are sending our 10 yr daughter https://www.facebook.com/106025862762782 Avid4 Adventure this summer. Sorta feels like a sampler plate of PC OE Classes! Good luck!
Chewonki Camp for Boys in Maine is a phenomenal organization, I worked there for the last several years. Super wholesome community with focuses on environmentalism, adventure, food systems and the natural world. morning farm chores and bird walks, sea kayaking trips, etc... highly recommended:)

My cousin whent to this camp many times. Nothing but rave reviews from community about it, especially the rites of passage ceremonies they hold for young men--Headwaters Outdoor School in Mount Shasta, CA http://www.hwos.com/
Sanborn Western Camps in Colorado. They do hike a bit, but also lots of other great adventuring.

I went to Prairie Trek out of Thoreau, NM. It's a part of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, which has camps for girls, boys, and younger kids. It is expeditionary, camping and hiking all through the southwest as well as summer projects and gatherings with other campers. I met five guys when I was 12, who I later saw as PC classmates, 8 years later, including Randy and Mark Udall. I can't recommend it highly enough. Took the Super Chief from Chicago to Gallup, and my new life began. Our kids went. When they were there, the camp director was Martin Heinrich, now the democratic senator from New Mexico. Check it out: www.cottonwoodgulch.org/

I was a counselor and outdoor living skills instructor for Timberlake and was really impressed by how strongly campers were encouraged to express themselves, to take responsibility for themselves, and to think about what kind of man they wanted to grow up to be. If your son is really into wilderness skills he might also really enjoy Flying Cloud, which is also under the F&W banner and is more of a no-frills experience that teaches self-sufficiency outdoors. https://farmandwilderness.org/

If the ocean is an option, I worked for this camp after graduating PC. http://catalinaseacamp.org SCUBA, sailing, snorkeling, Island Ecology. They have a small archery setup and climbing wall. They also have a land based astronomy camp called Astrocamp

EL Wire?
Anthony W. replied:
As Ian Pierce said...skip the inverter! Those of you running LEDs off an inverter are burning extra juice converting DC to AC with the inverter, then back to DC with the transformer plug on the light set. Remove the transformer and hook the LED wiring directly to the battery/fuse panel (with the correct polarity).
It is an amazing, foldable solar panel. Folds to the size of a bath towel. Links through this control unit and charges batteries. Learn more at http://store.adventuretrailers.com/solar/ We LOVE these guys, they know their stuff and their prices are fair!

Ian I must see this laser projector setup! In a related note / sounds like we should hang out and camp together soon!

Ian Pierce - We did make it up for a day for Strawberry, but didn't camp. That photo was at the Father's Day Bluegrass Festival (also at the Nevada County Fairgrounds). Lots of great camping between here and Reno. We ought to all find a spot in the National Forest for a night or two!
