I don't see much point in agencies. We used one the first time we sought an au pair. They just shrugged their shoulders when we were left high and dry having charged a fat fee for giving us a single choice. We subsequently discovered online was the cheaper, more diverse, way to go. Try an online nanny site or Gumtree and bypass the middle man.

Why a nanny/au pair? Do you have unusual working hours. Nannies are expensive, somewhat unregulated, and you cannot get a childcare rebate. Childcare centres really are very good now, 1:3 ratios for infants and are highly regulated. There is always someone else around so far less risk of a staff member doing something wrong with your child, and most have childcare qualifications or are supervised by someone who does. If you have more than three kids, you can essentially call your house a "centre", employ a childcare worker, and claim the child care rebate. Just poach one from a nearby daycare centre.
