Recommendations for Local Bike Shops in the Bay Area? I am beginning to consider replacing my trusty Trek. It probably won't happen until the next sale season, but I...

I like Chain Reaction (they're in RC and in Los Altos) and Bicycle Outfitter (Los Altos), both heavy Trek shops. Both have the problem that depending on when you go you might wind up with the 17-year-old kid who doesn't know crap about anything, but that seems to be a risk everywhere.

Avoid The Off Ramp in Santa Clara (can't speak for the Mountain View location). Last I checked a few months ago, some of the people working there have a very dismissive attitude that rubs me the wrong way. I live in the South Bay, so I unfortunately don't have any recommendations for Peninsula shops.

I would highly recommend Evolution Bike Shop in Cupertino. Nice guys, good prices (I've bought 3 bikes there for my family)

Go ride bicycles in redwood city http://www.goridebicycles.com/Site/Home.html has a pretty wide selection, and some killer closeout deals. Their sales staff was ok, nothing stellar, but I found their prices to be unbeatable. Haven't had any experience with their service department though.

I got a bike from Walt's in Sunnyvale a year ago and the people there were helpful.

The mechanic at [Performance Bike San Mateo](http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_10008000_-1___) (closest Caltrain stop = Hillsdale) is superb. After being a roadie for 7 years, I bought my second mountain bike (first one got stolen a month after a I bought it) from him last summer and it was one of the best tuned bikes I've had. In fact it was the same model as the one that got stolen, but his tuning job was like night and day compared to first one (bought elsewhere). I'd go there for maintenance and whatnot even without the Performance discounts.

I like Chain Reaction. When I lived in the Redwood City area, I went to them quite a few times and they were always really helpful, patient, and nice. I will also make the argument for Mike's bikes. First off, I will say that I am a bit of a homer for them because I have a couple friends that work at the LG location, but I started going to the one in Palo Alto before the LG one opened and was pleased with their service and the time they took to make sure I got what I needed. Also, if you get their service plan, I am pretty sure you can take it to any of their locations to get serviced. One quick story- I was riding the Waves to Wine last year and I cracked my frame riding up Marshall Wall. Got to the next rest stop, the Mike's Bikes mechanic helped me out and drove me to his shop in Petaluma, let me borrow a demo bike for the next day so I could finish the ride and ship my broken bike for nothing down to their Los Gatos store. It was nice to ride a $4000 dollar bike for a day, for sure. I sent him up a couple cases of beer for all that help.
