Duct cleaning recommendations? I've never had this done and I've owned my house for > 5 years. I'm sure they are filthy as the previous owners did some renos! Anyone...

As someone in the HVAC industry, I would say that most homes do not need duct cleaning. I've looked into ducts that are up to 60-70 years old. At that point it would make sense just because they're full of marbles, Lego, hot wheels, etc, you name it. The exception would be if there have been pets in the home, as dander will build up in the ducts. Generally, I would recommend that ducts be cleaned in the instance I've sighted above or right after the home is constructed( if the builder hasn't already had this done) or after a renovation. Otherwise, it's my feeling that it's a scam which a lot of older people (widows mainly) have foisted upon them. Beware any company that pushes duct cleaning. PM me if you want a good recommendation. Most companies that offer it don't even do it properly, they stick an air hose and blow dust around in your duct system and stick a shop vac in the register holes.
Duct cleaning every 5 years is advised. If you're getting cold-calls or door to door, it's generally a scam. I had these guys do a duct cleaning while I was having some other work done and was quite happy: http://climateworks.ca/

What ever you do, do not hire Duct to Duct.

After having my floors refinished I went with Ottawa Duct Cleaning. Homestars is a good website to check out when you're looking at hiring trades.

I cleaned air ducts for a very big company for many years. Most duct systems in ottawa are a slapped together mess, and lots of them are extremely dirty, you have no idea. After doing the work professionally for many years, I realized cleaning your air ducts does keep everything cleaner. Your furnace, A/C coil and filters. Duct cleaning should be an included part of the process on improving your homes air quality. If you want better air quality, you need better filters. To keep those filters clean & efficient, get your ducts cleaned.. professionally. Most people commenting in this thread about scammers, they are not wrong, there are tons of shitty duct companies in this city. Professionals committed to doing the work properly will always pre inspect the job.. always. When you have cleaned 2500sq ft houses that take you 6 hrs to clean properly.. you begin to realize how unique and complex some duct systems are built. Revelstoke and surrounding area, Georgina and surrounding area, Byron and surrounding area are examples of some nasty ottawa neighborhoods, for duct systems..at least. If a company gives you a phone quote.. which is roughly 95% of the companies in the city.. your taking a major gamble in regards to quality of the work that will be performed. You just dont know what your getting into.. do you think the company will take the extra time needed to do it properly.. not very likely, they already have another 2-5 cleanings booked after yours! Sorry for the short story here, but it fucking pisses me off when people talk shit about this trade, and they really dont have a fucking clue about how it really works. If you want me to hook you up with some solid duct cleaners, send me a PM.

I thought duct cleaning was a major scam?

Just bought a condo, thought I'd get the ducts cleaned... but there wasn't much point; so long as the air filter is maintained, and the ducts have air moved through there, the only thing in there is likely to be stuff that fell down the vents. Stick your vacuum cleaner hose in the vents, you'll be fine.

Duct cleaning is a waste of money. Airflow keeps ducts clean. Just buy a new filter. If you don't believe me, ask to see the duct cleaner's dirt catcher before and after he does the job. He won't remove even a handful of dirt from your entire house.
Hello Ladies,
Im looking for a duct cleaning company for my property in riverside south. I'd like a company that uses the vacuum trucks and not the portable ones.
