Hi! Does anyone have suggestions on how to celebrate carnaval?
Is it bigger and better in São Paolo or Rio?
Should I book with a tour company for about $650 for 3...

Actually Saõ Paulo Carnaval is as good as Rio (except for the traditional stadium parade which is def better in Rio). Both cities have many and many street blocos (party), in Rio go only to smaller blocos to enjoy which are usually in Santa Teresa e Centro. I wouldnt advise to go to big famous blocos as they are extremely overcrowded. São Paulo is more organised for the street blocos in my opinion and more clean. Many interesting blocos in SP center (Augusta, Republica e Anhangabau) and Faria Lima (all this are area of the city). This year there are some blocos in 23 de Maio which is a bit out of hand. Whatever you do, DO NOT BRING A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA and be very careful with your mobile phone. 650r for rio is a good price.

I recommend Carnaval in Rio and also in Recife & Olinda. It’s possible to go to both. I spent my first Brazilian Carnaval in 2012 in Recife and Olinda. I loved it and it was great as a foreigner as there are concerts and parades of a wide variety of all types of Brazilian and international music, not just samba. I’d love to go again! In Rio go to as many of the free blocos (street parties) as possible. & definitely go to the Sambadrome at least for the Champions Parade on Saturday 17 th to see the top 6 samba schools parade. If you’re on a budget you can get tickets for R10 for sections 12 & 13. I do that every year.

Do whatever other foreigners are doing....check www.riotimes.com for a list of blocos and to-do stuff.
Has anyone stayed in or around Rio de Janeiro that could recommend hostels? Know any friends who have? Thanks.
