For the best possible halloween band check out Roxircle! Great covers and suitably ghostly originals http://www.lemonrock.com/roxircle Review on Lemonrock ROxIRcLE, for me, is the most exciting new band playing original material to come along since Sun Dial in the early 1990 s. To be deserving of such high praise it is a given that the band is comprised of four experienced and highly-skilled musicians who possess the ability and equipment to comfortably achieve a consistent sound quality in any live environment.Tonight, stepping in late following another act's cancellation, ROxIRcLE adapted well to the demands and requirements of what proved to be a venue that has music rather than a music pub. The Broad Street Tavern is a large, friendly and well-run town centre hostelry with a big garden that, containing the dual attractions of a barbecue and a pleasantly warm May evening, was on this occasion packed by a throng of young people. As the gig progressed many of them joined the slightly older music lovers inside.Due to the somewhat eccentric 'stage' area in which the band was instructed to set up the path from pub entrance/bar to the garden led straight through ROxIRcLE, one can imagine the cumulative footfall! However, bassist Dave Waters, cool and confident in his shades, remained undeterred throughout at being separated from his co-members, interacting with the passers by - as too did barefoot Martin Garside, positioned with his back to the garden, who was able to both drum mightily and assist beer-laden punters with the tricky, slamming connecting door!Fortitude apart, what makes ROxIRcLE so special is the songwriting combo of technically perfect left-handed guitarist Dave Morris, who on originals is often understated to compliment and showcase the outstanding vocals of Deanna Royle. Don't take my word for it, listen for yourself. What a range! Among the comparisons I've heard made are to Noosha Fox, Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Tyler, Sonja Kristina, Janis Joplin...Deanna lives every song when she performs with her sexy voice embellished by even sexier choreography.Whilst it was a shame tonight that the proprietor requested a preponderance of covers several of them were amazing: "Nights In White Satin", The Rattles' "The Witch", "Whole Lotta Love", "Black Night" (on which Martin went crazy!) and an extraordinarily powerfully sung "Weak As I Am" (Skunk Anansie). But each of the nine original compositions was to be truly savoured. Tasty slide guitar on "The Craving", the quirky "The Chase" seems to be developing from the recently released studio CD ("This Deadly Game"), as does the epic "Black-Winged Dove". ROxIRcLE deliver music that flows from Heavy Rock to Folk Rock, often with Pagan/Gothic lyrics, emphasised this evening by the rangey "Vampire's Kiss" and especially the rounded "The Garden" which defines everything this band are about: a catchy riff that you think you've heard before but haven't, a chorus that stays with you and bewitching vocals.I feel that pubs and clubs with the courage to book ROxIRcLE to play mainly original compositions will be well rewarded by the association.
The closing date for this is coming very fast - We need three more bands to make up the number for heats so if you haven't applied yet and you are a band based loosely...
