It’s horrible to be in this situation. If she surrendered the cat to Animal Care And Control here in SF they will treat it or euthanize it if necessary. If they treat it, then they will try to adopt it out to someone who can afford to take care of it.

All the cats my family had (2 with my Mom, and 1 with my sister) grew old and passed away naturally at home. They were buried in the back yard. They didn’t euthanize them. Seeing people/animals grow old isn’t easy.

You can try contacting some rescues in the city, they have big hearts and want to help. Try contacting Pali at Rocket Dog Rescue, she’s amazing and helps with all kinds of animals, or will try to provide a resource that can help your sister. Wishing the best for her kitty
Can you recommend a German speaking tour guide for San Francisco?

SF Animal Control offers euthanasia and they often waive the cost for low income residents. They’re offering limited services right now so you might have to check it out: https://www.sfanimalcare.org/services/humane-euthanasia/ So sorry your sister is going through this. One thing she may have to grapple with is that because of COVID, some facilities may not allow you to be with the pet... Unsure how this has changed now that things are opening back up.
