What are the most affordable grocery stores for students in SLO? Any with decent health or natural food sections? I know there is a Trader Joes but was wondering what...

Sad to see Whole Foods take over New Frontiers, afraid selection will go down and prices go up. They had a really good Gluten Free selection. Trader Joes and Costco for my kids. Found Food for Less dirty and poor quality. Health Center will also have a Food Pantry for kids in need.

Trader Joe's.

Looks like there is now a Whole Foods. We don't have one in here in S. Oregon, will have to check it out. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/sanluisobispo
Cathy S. replied:
I don't find Whole Foods in the affordable category. I would stick to farmer's market, cal poly stand on highland across from orchard, trader joes and costco as others have mentioned. Not sure if there is a Sprouts yet.

Gina Ebert Levy Our D has extreme food allergies in SLO and has a really difficult time shopping in general. She went to New Frontiers and was so excited that Whole Foods offers all types of options she wasn't able to find before. Imagine the excitement of getting to eat her first chip in over a year. Most stores have a decent selection of gluten free but very few options for corn, soy, and nut free. I'm sure it is insanely overpriced but she is happy to have some more creature comforts in her life.

There's also a great Farmers Market on Saturday morning in the shopping center across from Laguna Lake Park, on Madonna. Thursday nights if fun, but for shopping produce I prefer the Saturday morning one. It starts at 8:00 am. http://www.slocountyfarmers.org/wp-content/uploads/jb_Uploads/SaturdayAM.htm
Does anyone here happen to recall Sen. Vincente Canet's collection of photos and artifacts that used to be on display in a side room of the Avila Grocery Store? Does...
Cathy L. replied:
Hal Martin?
Hal M. replied:
Matthew D. Herrera, The collection is very safe and I will be working on it soon! There are no photos from Don Juan Vincent Canet in the collection, he was great, great grandfather of Vincent Canes and he landed in Monterey during the Spanish American War and was granted a Mexican Land Grant. The collection is from Vincent Canet and is both complete and accurate. A very few were featured in the book "Ships and Narrow Gauge Railroads". I am returning to Avila Beach and you will be seeing much more soon!!!
Matthew H. replied:
Hal Martin: GREAT to hear they are safe. You need to do a book! A big, elephant-folio sized book with a ton of great photos. I would certainly buy one.
Hal M. replied:
Anthony Henderson, it was likely Vincent Canet, but could have been George Martin, prospector that graduated from The Colorado School of Mines in the late 1800 s.
