Research Reviews of Industry Related Research Equestrian Medical Safety Association, Safety Stirrups Currently not a subject of ongoing research. Special Olympics site has a some examples of safety stirrups for their athletes. Many “safety” stirrups on the market today are designed for experienced able-bodied riders

Thanks for all the comments! I have used Peacocks since they first came on the market, and several years ago I tried a pair of the bent leg style to see how they felt. Recently, I talked to someone who has a close connection with USPC, and she said they were beginning to lean towards the Australian/Bentleg stirrup due to some horrific accidents CAUSED by the peacocks. Samantha McFadyen, there is no mention of research in any manufacturers directions. Ginger LaBarre, yes, few people are aware that the bentleg style is not approved for special olympics, although a local therapeutic riding program uses them for lessons. Heidi Smith, Yes, I bought a pair of western safety stirrups while attending the CHA International Conference 2 years ago, and the directions were to put band on the outside. And Kidron Wise Young, Your understanding of why the band goes on the outside is commonly accepted, and considered correct. I just want to read the research report that decided this to be fact. I have a habit of questioning what I have been taught. There are lots of old wives tales in our profession.
I can find sites with doctor recommendations for the use of safety stirrups such as : http://www.horsesciencenews.com/horseback-riding/tack/doctors-recommend-horse-riders-use-safety-stirrups.php
