Hi all I need help,
I am thinking about getting a dog in a couple months.
The only issue is leaving the dog alone for 8 hrs when my partner and I are at work

Perfect solution for that dog Joy : what a nice story! Ty , look at the Oldies Club ( http://www.oldies.org.uk/ ) - this site brings together all older dogs in rescue or foster. An older dog can be very good choice, especially if her history is known and (for example), the dog is accustomed to being left. It almost goes without saying that a wise old dog can be a wonderful companion - when my sister got her first dog at age 50, I picked out Madge, a 9-year-old Jack Russell cross for her, who turned out to be the perfect first-time dog. My sis has now progressed to a 9-month-old Schnauzer cross (also a rescue) but without learning about dogs from Madge, it could have been a very different story. Good luck in your search!
Matt Simmons, each to their own. I am not criticising you or anyone here. The RSPCA advise such guidelines & that is all I "quoted" for reference. People have their own views far and wide of what you or I believe, and of course they do what they feel i s right or fitting in how they bring up their own pets. Don't be so sensitive and defensive! Just because I chose to not leave my dogs for more that 3 hours isn't a slight or dig at you, so no need to slam and knock the people who take "looking after their pets that far!!" I roll my eyes, your sarcasm is not needed here!!!

Some dog breeds tolerate being alone better. This might help: http://dogtime.com/.../characteristi.../tolerate-being-alone

Unfortunately, many rescues will not rehome dogs to people who are out all day - rescues are very strict these days. Clearly, it can work when a dog is at home all day with support from dog sitters and dog walkers etc but I think there are two importa nt things to bear in mind: the first is that you will need to factor in the expense of paying a dog sitter/walker to attend daily. The second is that the bottom line is - dogs crave human company above all else, and all dogs that have any sort of relationship with their owner WILL suffer if they spend long periods alone. If you love dogs, why not try volunteering at one of the rescue centres? Alternatively, you could volunteer for The Cinnamon Trust, an organisation that helps elderly people keep their dogs by having volunteer walkers for them. http://www.cinnamon.org.uk/ Later on, your circumstances may change and you will have the benefit of having learned a great deal about dogs and a much better idea of their needs.
