There’s an LA fitness downtown (right next to the basketball hall of fame) that isn’t too bad. It’s quite large and has an indoor pool. I preferred going to Club Fitness, a small, local chain of gyms. Their main location is in Enfield CT and was definitely suited for powerlifting and bodybuilding. They also had a location in West Springfield that had a CrossFit area. They have a few other locations as well, but I haven’t been to those. You’ll definitely want a car, the only public transit is an unreliable bus system.

For game stores, there's Off The Wall Games in Hadley ([http://otwgamestore.com](http://otwgamestore.com)) and Greenfield Games in Greenfield ([http://www.greenfieldgames.com](http://www.greenfieldgames.com)). Unfortunately Modern Myths in Northampton ([https://modern-myths.com](https://modern-myths.com) Is closing at the end of May. Those are the only ones I know of.

I have lived in Springfield my whole life and nothing bad has every happened to me, granted i live in a nice neighborhood. Trouble will find you quick if you’re a drug dealing gangster, but normal working folk have nothing to fear. Also rode public transit for my commute for two years. Unless you hate minorities and have a chronic fear of youngin’s sagging their pants, Springfield is a good city to call home.

I live in Chicopee, literally at the top of the hill from Baystate. Personally, I wouldn't want to live in Springfield. The city just has too many issues for my liking. Also, public transit isn't great and the PVTA is talking about service cuts. You're better off having a car.

No, Springfield is not as bad as it’s made out to be. There are some rough areas for sure, but most of the city is fine. In terms of the area around Baystate, the Atwater Park area is quite nice. Metro Center has a lot to offer too. I’d avoid Brightwood. I would suggest a car, however. There’s not much for grocery shopping in that particular area, and the PVTA isn’t the greatest transportation system. In terms of gyms, Planet Fitness in West Springfield is right across the river and is nice. Never too packed, clean, etc. Source: teacher in Springfield, former West Springfield resident.

You need a car in Springfield to get around. Based in your questions you won't want to take the bus. Uber is usually around but can get expensive. LA Fitness has a big selection of free weights, check them out. There's a Gold's in West Springfield, about the same driving distance from baystate.
I had a friend who came to baystate for his residency from kanas. He said baystate sold him a picture of springfield that didn't quite match up. It's a pretty hood city but most violoence is gang on gang or drug relatated. Treat it like any other big city and lock your doors and don't walk k. Certain areas at night. Don't live near the hospital if you can avoid it. West Springfield may be a little better rent wise and is a little safer. Areas in springfield I would look into east Forrest park sixteen acres for rent but it's mostly residential. If you want to specifics PM me
Edit -went to Springfield schools but typos are more from typing in a hurry.

All of downtown and metro area where the hospital is, is fairly trashy and ghetto. Life long resident of springfield and the neighborhoods just keep getting more and more depressed and ghetto. I wouldn't live near the hospital if you expect to live in a nice area with respectful people. The public transportation is.... OK. You'll be able to get to most places but it may not be all that of a convenient experience. And most busses stop running before 7 pm.
I really need a gym bag ... A cute pink one. Where can I get one .. ?.
