The Antiques Roadshow just mentioned the Illinois Watch Company of Springfield Il. Does anybody know where it was originally located in Springfield?

Larry S. replied:
Farrell Gay is perhaps the foremost collector of Illinois strap watches. He and some partners bought the old Sangamo Electric property and he salvaged much of the old signage. He's the main benefactor of the Iles House Foundation and his collection is housed in the basement at the Iles House, including the terra cotta Illinois Watch Factory signage.
Ronald T. replied:
The Illinois Watch Company building became the Sangamo Electric building. The clock tower visible from 9 th Street was part of the Illinois Watch building. An uncle of mine worked at Illinois Watch in the 30 s. As I understand it, they were bought out by Hamilton Watch of Lancaster, PA. My aunt (mother's oldest sister) and uncle moved to Lancaster at that time. My aunt lived in Lancaster for 60 more years.

I'll echo what Larry Stevens said - Farrell Gay is an amazing man to talk to about the Illinois Watch Co . I have 2 ladies wristwatches and he and I spent an hour while he showed me info on them and the treasure trove of items he has. Definitely worth a visit to the Iles House.
Mark H. replied:
My Dad worked at Sangamo, and my Uncle and Grandmother worked at Illinois Watch. I collect their time pieces as well. The Bunn Special is the one to have. Their history is really interesting and the how and why the morphed into Sangamo with the help of a young engineer named Lanphier.
