For apps you can get a couple meat and cheese plates done by Arrowine in Arlington. They are always a huge hit.

Avoid Avalon in Alexandria. We had a horrible experience with them in 2011 and they refused to talk to us about it. I've heard similar things from other groups over the last few years.

Red Hot & Blue - fabulous prices and who doesn't love BBQ?! Zoey's Kitchen - my friend needed a last minute caterer and found Zoey's was great! Good food selection, good price ($100 to feed 10-15, includes apps, non-alcoholic drinks, and main course).

We had Ben Lin do catering for our semi-formal wedding dinner. It involved about 20 guests at his private residence (I'm sure he does offsite catering) and a multi-course menu designed for us.
