It's always a bonus to have a nice dentist and someone close to home but there are some really really important things that should also stand out outside of certain conveniences. Alot of people don't realize that a cleaning isn't a standard price, rat her based on time spent and the needs of the patient. Just like having a maid who comes to your home once a month vs. Once per year (time spent, your oral health and price will and should differ), also you should be seeing a hygienist for cleanings not your dentist. If you are in and out super fast and a hygienist is not doing your cleanings, it is likely your cleaning ( or scaling is not being done thoroughly) and a cost savings is not benefiting you. Also, your insurance dictates how often you can have exams, new patient exams and how many minutes of cleaning/known as units of scaling you can have. Sometimes people think their bill is really high at a new office but could be attributed to certain services having a frequency of anywhere from 1/yr to 1/5 yr. It is absolutely true that alberta is one if not the highest for dental rates. The alberta dental association stopped regulating it in 1997 while other provinces continued to regulate.. 100% or 80% coverage means "the insurance company pays that percentage of what ever fee they allow" and yes,the insurance company can deem their allowed fee to be what ever they want also. They can say an X ray in your specific plan is $20, so they will pay 80% or 100% of $20, not the actual fee the dentist charges. This is very common, every employer is different not just the insurance company as a whole. Some of the largest employer plans/unions, in the city have some of the lowest fee schedules. for example alberta blue cross as of 2012 had at least 10 or more fee schedules some current and some hadn't allowed for inflation for many years, while a dentist likely increases their fee by a small percentage every year. Alot of people are also unaware that it is unlawful for a dentist to adjust their rates to each patients particular plan. they can face very serious consequences. The best way and fair way to compare rates is to pick a few services and call several offices to Compare. For example how much is your fee for a panoramic X ray, a 5 surface molar filling and 1 unit of scaling (which means 15 minutes of cleaning). Fillings, cleanings, exams etc have many different categories so comparing an overall bill to a friends is not an accurate comparison. I hope this helps, alot of good dentists get a bad wrap by bills being misunderstood, or cleanings taking too long, and alot of not so good dentists are appreciated simply because it seems like a cheap or quick visit.

I go about 15 mins into Edmonton to Lakeside Dental in Castledowns. Dr.Pohl and her team are sweet, professional and follow insurance guidelines.
Dr Lam at Sturgeon Family dental is super gentle, great with kids, and doesn't charge a penny over what's covered by our health plan. He has never recommended any work be done that wasn't necessary. Highly recommend.
