Im from Fayetteville/fort Bragg/pope. Im not too sure of housing on Pope. I grew up in Fayetteville and then my husband was stationed there as well. We never lived on base. But stay away from Spring lake, Hope Mills is pretty nice....Ramsey street is crazy busy....Morganton rd area is nice...i do agree that crime is a problem in so areas...look around sanford, hope mills...southern pines is beautiful but a little of a drive and pricey.

Pope still has housing as well as Bragg. As far a where you live if you decide to go off post then I'd recommend going to crimereports.com. It'll give you a good idea as to where to avoid living. We live off post, in Fayetteville, and we like where we're at. It's a nice subdivision with nice neighbors. :) Every town, no matter where in the world, you're going to have your good and bad areas. Not all of Fayetteville is bad.

We live off post near Linden Oaks (Cameron, NC off of NC HWY 87). We chose to live off post because we pay MUCH less than our BAH. If you decide to live on post, Linden Oaks is a lovely neighborhood (mil housing). It and we are about 20 min from the Pope gate. Linden Oaks has their own CDC for child care and there's civilian daycare 5 min away. We're about45 min to an hour away from Raleigh and Cary. We prefer to go there than to Fayetteville for movies, dinner, mall shopping, etc. Sanford is nice in some areas and is about 40/45 min away from post. I hear Carolina Lakes (near Buffalo Lake if you look on a map) is nice and so is Carolina Trace (further north but not as far as Sanford); both are gated golf course communities. It seems to be PCS season here as several of my neighbors have listed their houses for rent and/or sale, so hopefully that means there will be openings on post.

On post is much safer than off post. Although be cautious on post too. Off post has bad city schools unless you move out to Moore County (Aberdeen, Southern Pines, Pinehurst). That's a good 30-40 minutes though. Fayetteville and Spring Lake is very unsafe and yucky. Hope Mills is alright, but all Cumberland County Schools have bad performance so as far as schools you're better off on post. We lived in Hammond Hills and Nijmegan and absolutely loved both!

We were at Bragg for about fives years. I lived both on post and off. Most of the housing on Bragg is new or about to be redone... and it is super nice on the inside... and BIG. I have had friends who lived on Pope and the newer housing on Pope is super nice as well, the older stuff if fine I am sure... just like the old housing on any installation. I did find the crime rate to be higher in Spring Lake and Fayetteville than other places I have lived... and Bragg does have its problems at times, but I never had any problems. Just learn the areas to avoid(Bragg Blvd, Skibo Walmart, ect.) and use common sense(keep you locked up and don't leave valuables out in the open) and you should be fine. I honestly hated living there, but now that I am gone I kinda miss it. It is located well, so there is plenty to do. There are lots of great local restaurants, museums, Wilmington and Carolina Beach are short drives, and Raleigh is nice... Plus Myrtle Beach is awesome, so it is what you make of it.
