Sounds like a hard drive issue. It could happen to any computer, and doesn't mater if it's a Windows PC a Mac or even a Linux box. Hard drives fail. In fact, Macs and PCs now have most of the same guts. Intel i series chips and Toshiba, Seagate or Hitachi hard drives. Did you have a backup?
