We are heading out from Sacramento to Southern California and thought we would take a coastal route and stay one night somewhere between Monterey and Santa Barbara. We...

We have some wonderful parks in Ventura County, some inland and some right on the coast. The County parks dept has done a great job on upgrading and maintaining the parks. Some have full hook ups at about $32 a night, beach campsites are more, but right on the water. They are all along the Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 corridors. If you want the ocean try Hobson, Faria or Rincon Parkway. Be sure to visit old town Ventura and the pier too! I think you might be too big for Limekiln. McGrath SP and Emma Wood SP are both nice parks in the Ventura area, a little south of Santa Barbara. You will likely need reservations at most parks near the coast.

I assume you're talking about going down Highway 1 between Monterey and SB. No boondocking that I'm aware of, but there are several really nice state parks on that route. Limekiln and Julia Pfieffer Burns come to mind. I haven't stayed at either, but have driven by and I do know several who have camped at one or both. I don't know, given the time of year, if reservations are needed (probably not at limekiln 'cause it's farther down). The road is doable for a 30', just take it slow and easy - I think that's below the maximum length on that road, but you can go to dot.ca.gov to check. I know there are several stretches that are traffic-light controlled 1 lane sections. Not too familiar w/places below Hearst Castle. Have a good trip.

Sadly McGrath has been closed due to flooding,,, it's a State Park. A little north of Santa Barbara are Refugio SP, El Capitan SB and Gaviota SB... no hookups but beautiful beach campgrounds. You can make reservations on Reserveamerica.com but depending on which days you're traveling you might not have any issue getting a spot in person.
