\~$600 is the going price for a entry level new city/hybrid bicycle. I think the used shops have already been mentioned but I would also recommend checking out Fairfield Bicycles if new is at all a consideration. Fairfield's niche is the everyday cyclist so they don't really stock carbon racing or mountain bikes and generally have a better selection of quality 'around town' bikes for commuting, cargo, exercise, and the like. Personally I've enjoyed great service from their mechanics in the past and if you don't want to shop around in person to a ton of places I would give them (and other local shops) a quick ring or email. I'm sure they would be happy to explain what might be a good fit for your situation so you could determine if it is worth a in person trip to check out fit.

Something of note, you may have to be patient and make some compromises. Usually the market for used bikes is pretty robust in Victoria but this year seems to be an anomaly. COVID has increased the demand for bikes with a lot of folks wanting to get out and enjoy a safe outdoor activity. That has less 'ignored' bikes on the market as folks who would have sold are utilizing them and more folks looking to pick something up. On top of a change in habit for used bikes most new bikes are manufactured offshore with factories shut down early in 2020 just reopening and now having issues shipping internationally with reduced cargo ship capacity. In speaking with folks at bike shops they are busier then ever and also having a harder time than ever getting stock in. The repairs departments are way over usual capacity and also delayed in getting parts.

Rebuy and Recyclistas as mentioned are the two used "specialists", Cycles West often has some used stock as well. More shops used to do used but with the issues around rampant theft it's hard to take on the liability. Most shops will only take used if it's something they sold someone.

Maybe not used but Oak Bay Bicycles had one or two at your price range. They’re pretty good I think the basic Norco model was 550 or something like that

North Park sells some used bikes, but you should also be able to get a new bike from them for that price. Bonus, it will be under warranty with free tune ups.

I was in your shoes last month! I went to Recyclistas and the used shop in Langford. Way more bikes at the shop in Langford but they definitely weren’t in as good shape (lots rusted, torn up seats, etc.) Recyclistas had really low stock but their staff was really helpful. Most of their bikes seemed to be anywhere from $250-600 (tax included). Be prepared to buy as soon as you find something you like, as they’re flying off the shelves and you won’t really have the luxury of shopping around.

I was debating whether or not to post the same question! I'm looking for exactly the same thing - something simple to get me from point A to point B. I'm checking out Recyclistas this week. I've been told (by someone who shops there regularly) that most of their adult bikes are in the $300 to $600 range.

Performance Bicycles is good. If not try MEC. They've got pretty much everything you need for bikes.

No bikes in your room, but there is storage in some of the res basements, plus lockers outside the buildings and all across campus. Campus Security and SUBText in the Student Union Building are other good resources for bike storage questions:)

I can check with a friend of mine and his wife who are in Maui right now. It is only 6:30 AM there right now. I know they, and another friend, all of whom ride Specialized bikes, deal with Simons Bike Shop on Robson. Not sure what they carry in the way of clothing, but they have a website.
