Anyone know of a vet doing house calls right now?
We have a 13yo,100# golden retriever who is having a hard time right now.
Heidi U. replied:
They will all take their own call. I don’t know if any will do house calls, but call each of the clinics. Dr. Beck owns Hillcrest Animal Hospital, and is who I used to work for. He takes all of his own after hours calls. 573-6131 Dr. Mark’s office recently expanded! He owns Crossroads Vet Clinic. They take call too! 575-3692

I very highly recommend Glenview Animal Hospital (in Langford at the end of Jacklin) and their sister clinic, Eagle Rise Animal Hospital, in Colwood above Lee Valley Tools. Their vets are amazing (especially the vet-owner, Dr. Collis) and will go out of their way to fit you in for urgent care. Between the two locations they're open late weekdays and on weekends I know I'm sounding like a corporate shill here, but they've done some amazingly complicated surgeries for me and diagnosed some really weird stuff. I'm so thankful to have these guys in Victoria:)

Call the SPCA and ask for recommendations, Or Dr. Patrick Gregory (viper@uvic.ca, 250-721-7103) studies snakes at UVic and should be able to recommend a snake doc in town.

Try asking the BC reptile club.
Blood_Bath_Beyond replied:
Or go into Creatures Pets on Bay street and ask. They sell snakes there so they might be able to help you

I can personally recommend Dr. Google.

Victoria has a lot of good vets, and to be fair having to spend a lot of money doesn't mean your vet was necessarily bad. Pets sometimes cost a lot of money. But vets are human and do make mistakes, and if they didn't treat you well that sucks too. I'll vouch for [ELVH](http://www.elvh.ca) personally - a great family-owned practice with very skilled vets and wonderful staff.

I'm exclusively a dog owner, and last year switched to McKenzie Veterinary Services at 3888 Carey Rd. I have had excellent service from a variety of veterinarians there. I really appreciate that they are open to 9 pm many days of the week, which makes getting the dog in outside of regular business hours a lot easier. Previously I was at Hillside Vet, but when the veterinarian we loved left the practice, the quality of care took a serious nose dive. I loved the front desk staff there, but had serious issues with several of the veterinarians, so now I'm happier elsewhere.

I moved to the mainland but when I lived in Victoria I went to Kindred Spirits. Can’t thank them enough for helping save my dog. It was touch and go and eventually had to go to Central hospital for a few weeks. When I left Central they said he might live a few weeks, months no more than a year. When I went back to Kindred Spirits they came up with a treatment plan and 3 years later he’s still going strong. I still travel back to Victoria for his yearly check up. They are a pretty progressive Vet.

I really like Hillside Vet clinic. I have a number of friends who go there (some with cats) who also love them. I find them very compassionate and like that they give you options and give you all the pros and cons to help make the decision.

karmatic89 replied:
Central sannich animal hospital is wonderful. Dr. Hauer is amazing. I've exclusively gone to her for about 4 years now. She always provides great care and service, as well as goes beyond her duties. This includes texts and pictures of how my pet is doing if it's a surgery visit, and friendly chats during exams. Not to mention free advice, and she goes out of her way to find out options and recommendations for training/ diet/ enrichment. The front counter girls and technicians are incredibly friendly too. They offer pet insurance through TruPanion as well, so any unforeseen problems are easily covered financially.

Dr. Rolfe at Thetis Heights Vet Clinic in Langford is THE BEST. I have a dog and a cat. I drive to Langford just for him and we live on the other side of Vic. I’ve had terrible experiences at McKenzie Vet. Good luck!

I am a huge fan of Vic West Pet Hospital. Dr. Shergill has been absolutely wonderful to all of my pets, and his staff is super lovely, too. I went there when I found a dog last year and my usual vet didn't have any time available to check for a microchip, and Vic West Pet Hospital had just opened up on Esquimalt Rd. Since then, I've only gone there. Between my partner, myself, and the friends I have directed there, he's seen two dogs and 10 cats that I personally know, and the care has been exemplary in every case.

The one in tuscany village? Charged me $140 to look at my cat and tell me they don't know and hand me a perscription for some anti fungal cream. When I went to Feltham gordon head they charged me $70 for the check up and to give my cat a shot because she got into something and was puking. Never had a problem with them in the four years Ive been bringing my cat.

Hi Laura I'm happy to agree with Benjamin John - I have always been very satisfied with Wanneroo Vet. They have always suggested a conservative approach before trying the expensive, high-tech alternative.
Akhil S. replied:
If you don't mine the drive I use Bedford Dianella vet. They're always going with the cheapest and best option. They talk me through the options and they've never jumped the conclusion where as vet west in currambine is a hit and a miss. The south African vet at vest wet in currambine is the only one I trust the rest have been useless.
Cass K. replied:
A third here for Bruce and his team at Wanneroo Vet. An alternative if you don't mind the drive is Swan Vet. They are very cheap but you can wait awhile as its no appointments. We use them quite a lot with rescue and they are far cheaper for surgeries etc.
Peter B. replied:
Laura, Bruce Young is the best and I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else. He even gets down on the ground with them to examine. Them. Good luck

We use Anicare Pet Hospital on Mt. Newton, and they've been great for our dog (10 years!)
ScurvyDawg replied:
What vet is right for you cannot be answered easily. There are many factors I consider when using Veterinary services. Core values is a big one for me. I ask questions about Vaccine protocols and if they do Titer tests or yearly vaccinations. I also ask about their ideas on nutrition and this one is a real stickler for me. If they say single source commercial foods only I run and I run far away. Some Veterinary offices are pet food and drug companies running under the banner of health care facilities. I find that somewhat distasteful. I've used Anicare Pet Hospital, Kindred Spirits and East Gate Veterinary services and all seem like good options.

I like Breadner Veterinary. The doctors are nice and genuine in their care for your pet. My kitten just finished getting all his vaccines and they took great care of him and helped answer any of my questions. I definitely recommend them! I asked and they do surgeries and dentistry's and some lab tests. so i won't have to worry about going to another clinic for procedures. The staff is very friendly too!

Where do you live? I've had good experiences bringing my cat to the Fairfield Pet Hospital, but I wouldn't say that they are worth driving across the city for. I have heard good things about Hillside from a few people, so it might be worth checking out.
viress replied:
I really like both the vets at Lakehill - they've been great to us, and they do what they can to minimize costs. Whatever you do, do not go to Oak Bay Vet Clinic - the vet there is insane, hurt my cat because she was angry at me (over fighting bogus charges) and they rip you off in every way they can.

Teresa B. replied:
I don't recommend Saseenos in Sooke. We went there when Luna was a puppy, the two doctors never agreed and gave very different advice, super frustrating. Now we see Dr Thompson at Lakehill on Quadra. He's awesome. Highly recommend him.
Tanya F. replied:
I used to take my last heeler to Lakehill on Quadra.. I would describe it as a walk in clinic, you got the basic treatment with them collecting money from you. The answer to fixing anything was just throw medication at her for the pain to make her stoned. When I got Brodie I asked the question of what Vet to take him too and everyone I talked to with a heeler recommended ELK LAKE VET. ( Dr Gaunt and Nancy ) In the few visits I've had to take Brodie in they have gone above and beyond every time. There not just about your money. When Brodie was really sick I had to take him in and the next day they called to see how he was doing. If they didn't have an answer for any of my questions they would get the Vet to call me directly for I didn't have to bring Brodie back in for something minor. Even when he got fixed and had his back dew claw removed they called me to see how he was doing and gave me instructions of taking the bandage off and what to look for to make sure it was heeling nicely.

Dr. Malcom MacKenizie on Burnside is fabulous and has looked after all 4 of my Heelers past and present over the last 20years.
