You can try Wake County Animal Shelter. There are lots of dogs in their foster program (being "sheltered" in private volunteer homes). Those dogs typically have a lot of info on behavior (kid/cat/dog friendly) and fosters work on house and leash training them.

Compass Rose off of Gresham Lake or Hoppy Ending off of Litchford Rd. Both have held charity events and bands and are local small owned businesses. The service at Hoppy Ending is great. Very sweet couple!
