I have those tractor supply mats. They are awesome. I have 6 of them laid down in my garage on the concrete. They are indestructible. They have a slight odor when you first lay them down, but it goes away after a little while.

If you're dropping significant weight on the ground you may want to glue the stall mats to some plywood for more floor protection.

I used two packs of the foam tiles from Sam's Club on top of two sheets of plywood. They were $25 each and I think they're even cheaper now. [It's working great for me](http://i.imgur.com/moOug.jpg). A year and a half in and while it gets indentations and stuff pretty easily it still looks great and it's holding together well.

Have you checked your buildings specs. They sometimes have very specific requirements.

Texas here. we went with 10mm and believe that should be a minimum thickness. we also purchased pergo on sale at HD that had the underlay pad already attached to the planks. I believe they had installers at around $500 - which isn't terrible, but we did it ourselves to save money.
What is the best thickness? 12mm, but wouldn't go less than 10mm.
Is the most expensive and best water proof padding necessary? ours was already attached to the planks, which saved some $$. Go middle of road on padding otherwise - not the cheapest, but not the best. IMO.
What's the real difference between the cheap stuff and the expensive stuff? Usage like animals and kids, scratching, how it feels under your feet, does it make you feel good about your space, how it appears to guests.
How much should it cost to install? HD had a sale with install for $495 up to 1,000sqft if memory serves.
Don't forget to budget for plastic if you are installing on concrete - the plastic acts as a moisture barrier. There are rolls of it in HD, but the price will be a little additional which you should consider.
On the installation bid - they included little things to look for. For example, they wanted $100 to cut the mortar around the fireplace, additional cost (@$185) to lay down the plastic I mentioned, and a few other items. Just be sure to scan through the itemized install bid and walk through it with the salesperson, because it can add up to the $495 they quoted.
Good luck!

Just installed some pergo on my own in my condo, here are some tips that may help.
Do you know what your subfloor is made of? if its concrete don't worry about it. If it's plywood, consider your downstairs neighbors if you are going from carpet to laminate. Get thicker stuff if you can, just make sure your main door to the outside can open over it.
It's more expensive, but just let them replace the baseboard. I went the easy route since I was doing it on my own (and living there) and wish I wouldn't have gone for shoe molding.
Get some samples of what you like and take it to your house and place it against things like walls doors/entryways to other rooms. Also take some keys and try try scratch the samples, you want highly scratch resistant stuff.
Also, even the expensive stuff is suseptable to water, I learned that the hard way. Make sure you clean up any spills right away.
hope some of this helps.

We were going to get Pergo, but decided on this other brand instead, and we got our carpenter friend to install it. He said he had not installed this brand before, but it turned out to be the best laminate he ever installed: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Legend-Hand-Scraped-Maple-Sedona-3-8-in-Thick-x-4-3-4-in-Wide-x-47-1-4-in-Length-Hardwood-Flooring-299-28-sq-ft-pallet-HL130H-12/202882280
