My elderly father can no longer drive and regularly visits the nursing home my mom is in. Due to an injury, the relative who had been taking him is unable to do so for...

I was just at the aging and Disability Center today to get some information and was told they have a list compiled of all those that they approve to do these types of jobs. I can give you their number as well, Janice Plamann Santa Cruz... They do background checks on everybody!
Chris R. replied:
Call 211. It's a service of the United Way, and the operators have access to databases with a plethora of information on resources that can help with this or many other situations. I worked the 211 lines as a volunteer here in Austin following hurricanes Katrina and Ike and I can tell you the information available is detailed and voluminous. Here's a link to the WI 211: http://www.211 wisconsin.org/

Beverly Arrowood, no I'm married to John Santa Cruz from Superior, Arizona. We live in a Phoenix suburb. Plamann is my maiden name, not part of my name any more but shown so people from high school and the old neighborhood can find me. You referring to a Michael Plamann or Santa Cruz?
Joan K. replied:
I have used one through North Central Health Care. They were fairly inexpensive and the driver is allowed to assist the rider getting out of the home if needed. The person I was with was in a wheel chair and they treated him like a king. They would certainly be my choice. In reference to the city bus, I see and hear when they stop on the corner where I lived that the have a "kneel mode" where the driver is able to lower the bus to curb level to aid people getting on who might have problems with the high step. Great for strollers too. There is also Elder Sanctuary on Thomas St. Here are a few more listed on 211 United Way. http://www.referweb.net/wimc/MatchList.aspx?c%3B%3B0%3B%3BN%3B0%3B0%3BTransportation%3BTransportation%3B0%3BSenior%2520Ride%2520Programs%3B0%3BN

Frances I. replied:
I second Aging & Disability. Also, the United Way of Marathon County maintain a database of all local resources. You may also try Abby Vans out of Neillsville, WI. They specialize in non-emergency medical transport. Not sure if this would count, but it's a place to call.
Karen M. replied:
Try Faith In Action. My husband used to volunteer for them, and they did exactly what you're asking and more.
Carrie A. replied:
Elder Sanctuary also might do this.

I think Colonial Manner has a shuttle service as well, but it may only be for residents. Worth a try though.
