Quite honestly, these are very simple machines, mechanically. About all they require is regular cleaning of the lint from under the needle plate and in the bobbin area and oiling. The Adjusters Manual (service manual) is in the group files, although it's not really necessary.

You can absolutely tune it up yourself. The owners manual should be in the files or you can download a free one at singerco.com It will give you the info you need on oiling and lubing...to be done after its clean. Great machine, one of my favorites.
