If you're just going for your taxes, a stock CPA is fine. But if you want to build a relationship with your CPA for investment strategies or anything more, just confirm they are a fiduciary. Otherwise you're vulnerable to being steered towards commissioned or referral based products.

Why didn't you qualify for free filing ? It gives you the reason, whether it's income is above the threshold, etc. Programs like Taxact, Turbotax, etc usually follow the IRS' guidelines for free filing qualification so switching probably won't make a difference. Places like H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt would be the next best option for you although everyone I hear that goes to them just seems to get nickel and dime'd with different fees and they end up paying a couple hundred dollars there too....

CreditKarma has totally free Fed and State tax filings. They don't support some of the more complex stuff, but if you have a basic W-2 and/or some investment income it works great. I used it last year.
