Yea, I am very well aware of that. I went to school with his kids. But Terrys plumbing is TERRY'S PLUMBING and if I am correct they have not been around since 1920. Just saying, thanks for trying to give me a school lesson though. Appreciate it.

Try searching for a local water company so you get local service and warranty without the national high price like costco.

I also vote for DIY. It really isn't hard, use sharkbites. I got my stuff from waterfiltersofamerica.com. Their website is straight out of 1998 but their service and prices are great. Next option is to use a local plumber. Do not use Culligan, Kenetic etc. their prices are way too high. They have to pay for those high pressure sales people somehow. Seriously google how to use a sharkbite connections, it is really easy.

If all the plumbing is in place I'd just DIY.

First, I'd find out how hard your water is. The normal scale is 0-10 for 'very hard', and my area is over 30. I opted for a nicer, larger softener so I don't have to deal with it as often. I paid ~$1900 for a nice filter+softener and bumped the size up to a family, including install. It broke within a month (tiny clog / issue), guy came out and fixed it for free (warranty) and it's been good ever since.

Not sure what you found for $600 but you need to make sure it has enough capacity (grains) to support your families needs. Also not sure what your plumber was going to do for $1800, but it could be OK or a huge ripoff. If $1800 included good equipment, and all electric it could be a good deal, if he's charging $1800 in labor to install something you buy, in a pre-plumbed area, it sounds like a ripp-off.

5000 even if the plumbing isn't in place is entirely too high, what was Costco trying to sell you? Even a top of the line Kinetico system is probably only 2,000 bucks.

I was in a similar situation, bought a house with a broken softener (which was kindly left in the garage for me to dispose of). I bought a new softener from Amazon (and I think it was about $600) and had a local guy install it. I have pretty high water pressure (80 psi) so it was a bit challenging to get the pipes sealed but in the end I've been really happy with it. I think $1800 is a little high but I guess depends on the area.I also bought my reverse osmosis filter from Amazon (7 stage, but not sure I need the UV) and it does a good job - it was about $200, and I plumbed it into the fridge. All of the local "water filter" companies quoted very high, like $5K.

If it's already plumbed for a softener you can totally diy it. You have to hook up two hoses to connect inlet/outlet between the softener and the house and follow directions for the softener to put it together. The only thing I can see that might take some time is routing the drain. If you're ok dumping the water close by on the ground then it's easy. Otherwise you have to route it to somewhere that will go to your sewer, still easy as it went involve pvc if you have a trap in your garage for laundry.
