Looking for gym suggestions to build paddling strength What can I do in the gym to hit key paddling muscles?

I don't have a lot of advice but I can tell you that paddling is a "pulling" sport. Where as the action of paddling is pulling the paddle closer to your body. Similar to climbing. Many physical therapist suggest when doing a sport that involves one action like pulling to make sure you balance out your muscle growth.. with something like pushing, with the same muscle group. So I know a lot of paddlers and climbers that do push ups in an effort to balance out their muscle growth. I would think most exercises designed for core work outs would also be good, things like kettle bells and medicine ball workouts. Sorry I don't have more specifics of "if you do this you will get better at kayaking..." It might be worth while looking for a rowing machine in the gym, not 100% like paddling a kayak but closer then a stationary bike.

I was thinking about this a good bit lately and here's a split that I came up with that I think would help with strength training and overall fitness that accounts for paddling at the same time. This doesn't go into specific exercises, but as others have suggested, you should be doing push movements on your chest day. You should also be doing rotator cuff strengthening exercises as often as you can in there as well as a good stretching routine too. Any suggestions or feedback?

I'm a big fan of /r/bodyweightfitness If your paddling technique is good, you will mostly be using core, lower back, shoulders and arms. BWF is a more complete workout, doesn't isolate as much as lifting weights does, and you can do it anywhere without a gym.

Anything that works your core will help. The best exercises for the core are not isolated movements, but movements where the core has to work as a stabilizer. For this purpose Olympic lifts, deadlifts, and squats are all great. There’s a reason powerlifters have tree trunk torsos. Don’t use a smith machine, as that prevents your core from having to stabilize.

I know it's the wrong time of year for this, but Eric Jackson has a winter workout guide that puts together allot of the ideas other commenters have mentioned here. I find it really helpful when work or the weather keep me from paddling. Here's a link: http://jacksonkayak.com/blog/2012/03/12/how-to-get-yourself-and-equipment-ready-for-the-kayak-season/
