Are there any good books or websites for trail descriptions on the trails to the 4000er summits? Trailhead locations? Campsites or local motels? Looking for best way to plan for my upcoming hikes. Thanks!Rick D. replied:The Mountain Wanderer sells a good map - Rangley Lakes Region by The Wilderness Map Co which is very good. As mentioned the 4000 footers.com site is also very good. I've also stayed at the Spillover Motel in Stratton ME to reach 8 of the ME peaks....clean place, reasonably priced and good complementary coffee! Good food within walking distance- the Looney Moose for breakfast and don't miss the Coplin Dinner House for an awesome dinner!Evan D. replied:I used the Appalachian Trail Guide to Maine and the Maine Mountain Guide for my Maine 4000 footers. They also just printed a nice Ranglely Lakes region area map with all the hiking trails on the map. Unfortunately there isn't any one good source for all the Maine peaks. You will also have to pick up a Baxter State Park Map. The AMC makes a great Tyvek version for hiking.Mark K. replied:I have been using http://4000 footers.com/ as well as trail reports from VFTT.org and "New England trail conditions".

I finished my 48's in September and need to start planning my next hikes! :) Thanks!John C. replied:I've been working on the 67 with a freind and I found the documentation much thinner than the 48. This website is the best I found http://www.4000 footers.com/ Be ready for a lot of road walks, a lot of access roads to trailheads are marginal with bridge outages.
