I saw a visiting Australian mom-to-be, who was excitedly five-weeks along with her first baby. She presented through a local physician's referral with severe TMJ. As I went through her history, she also stated that she had low back pain. During the evaluation I found that her low back craniosacral fascial strain was pulling into her lower jaw. Our newborn research revealed that most nursing issues begin as craniosacral fascial strain in the infant's pelvic floor. I knew that if we did CFT for her, strain would pass through the embryonic/fetal area.
I told her that we have a strict policy on not treating pregnant women with CFT. I honestly do not know how much strain is around and actually a part of the embryo/fetus and how the embryo/fetus will respond to CFT. Hopefully, positive research in this area will be forthcoming. She said that she would do other forms of bodywork like chiropractic for comfort until the baby arrives. She is planning on having CFT post delivery when she returns to the Philadelphia area.
