We have a 4 month old retriever mix who needs her last round of shots (Parvo, etc.) before she can be in a highly dog populated area (so I think PetSmart is a no-go). However, we'd like to get started on obedience training pretty soon. Can anyone recommend any trainers that are reasonably priced that will come to your residence? We found one but after reading reviews it was going to run us about $800. Any information helps! Thanks.

In 2 sessions he had my dog go from almost killing our new kitten to completely ignoring him, and now being super gentle with the cat. Jennifer H. replied:Cesar Milan's & 101 dog tricks books and do it yourself... Pet Smart as backup but I found when I read strategies on my own, pet smart wasn't worth it! Focus on sit, stay and come first before the fun ones... Lead bodies with their noses... For instance drag treat up and over their nose, over their head towards their butt and they automatically sit down, then cheer and reward! It's super important in the beginning while they are puppies to make a high pitch yelp/YIP everytime they bite your hands! That way they'll know they are playing too rough/biting not allowed. Good for Max to yip!! Also your posture is huge! Always go to pet under their chin first so they know to nuzzle and when you are mad get quiet, straight back, shoulders back and chin up grunt/tsk as alpha and they'll know who's boss!! If they won't make eye contact long while your posture is stiff they respect you as alpha! 15 min sessions: when puppies lick a lot they are thinking/working out the problem solving... I had tons of fun with it!BarkBusters.com they will come to your house...

But their method makes 100% sense. No screaming or swatting. The trainer came to my house twice and that was all I needed. But it took continuing work on my part, of course, since the dog lives with me. I had them come when my St. Bernard was 7 months old, when he only had a couple bad puppy habits. It was the best thing I did. He quickly understood what was acceptable and what was not. But you have to be willing to accept that you are the "leader" in your house, not the dog. Not saying you aren't, but I know people whose dog rules the house and that also confuses the dog's role.
