  Looking for recommendations and a little advice. I want to explore the idea of removing a wall between the living room and kitchen (open the house up a bit and get more light to the living room; we get a lot of shade). I am not sure if I'd need an architect or engineer or if a contractor can figure out if the wall in fact can come down? Local recommendations?

  You need a structural engineer if it is a supporting wall. Arthur LaBresseur (617) 965-5955 We just went through this and had a beam put up because we removed a supporting wall.
