The Ontario "Pit Bull" Co-op was founded in 2005 as a response to the enactment of breed-specific legislation (BSL), which targets dogs deemed to be “pit bulls” and those of a similar appearance.
The initial goal was to build a community for dogs that may be considered vulnerable under DOLA and their owners who were concerned for their pets’ safety and well-being. We began by facilitating dog walks for the purpose of support and socialization. To date, we have organized over 400 walks and events in Toronto and have expanded our organization over the last 4 years to include 7 chapters province-wide.
We organize outreach in local communities by participating in events with both vulnerable dogs as well as all breeds, shapes, and sizes of dogs. We host our own events as well as participate in community events such as parades and fundraisers for organizations including the Guide Dogs of Canada and Cystic Fibrosis Research.
We believe in supporting the greater community and strive to help people understand who we are at heart: good people with great dogs.
Over the last decade our role has continually expanded. We find that we are often the first point of contact for those who find themselves needing help or information. We reach out to the broader community when necessary to help find answers to legal questions or to help put people in touch with resources such as legal counsel, rescues, veterinarians and trainers.
When facing discrimination as a result of their canine companion's appearance, members can turn to each other for support knowing they understand and can relate.
We are proponents of humane and intelligent ways to foster strong, healthy and responsible pet ownership. To this end, we, along with a wide network of individuals and organizations, advocate for breed-neutral laws and promote successful models for responsible ownership and community safety like the one found in Calgary, Alberta.
