  I have several flutes, have made a few myself, and am currently decorating a flute (kit) from Walt LaForet at flutesonline.com. The flute kit I got from him played well (and was in tune) right out of the box and I am delighted with it. With that said, Walt has a FAQ page here: http://www.flutesonline.com/help_naf.htm He recommends both High Spirits Flutes and Stellar Flutes for beginners. Odell Borg (of High Spirits Flutes) has a bunch of instructional videos on youtube that are fantastic and helped me learn, myself, how to play.
