  I'm curious why you feel an engineer is needed. During my 21 years in the construction field, I didn't encounter a single issue on a residential project that required a structural engineer. It's very rare that one is needed in residential. A competent renovation contractor can handle nearly anything, and if an architect or engineer are needed, they'll let you know. They do amazing work, and have done projects with complex structural challenges, such as converting an old factory into loft apartments.
