I never saw myself as the type to hire a 'private chef', but when it was suggested to me by some special guests visiting from abroad, I figured it was worth a shot. What a great idea it turned out to be!
Rami Meyer is a personal chef in Jerusalem who cooked up a storm for us one Shabbat in our very own kitchen. Actually, this wonderful experience started a week or 2 earlier with menu suggestions exchanged by e-mail. Then he came over and sat with us over menus, supplies, shopping, etc. Rami then checked out our kitchen, and reviewed with us the logistics of pots, forms, timing, and everything else involved in cooking 2 complete meals for 9 people the night before.
Unfortunately, Rami was not able to do the shopping as well, as originally planned, but he did provide a detailed shopping list for us. He then came over to our house on Thursday afternoon, took out his own knives (the one utensil he insists on using his own) and got to work. He tried to work as independently as possible, but it was good that I was around to point him to the staple supplies or pick out the right pot. By the time he left 6 hours later, our refrigerator was bursting but the kitchen smelled great.
The real test, however, came the next day. In a word, everything was delicious. Even our guests (who have their own full-time personal chef) were impressed! Our only complaints were that there was WAY too much food for the number of people, and the dessert wasn't really appropriate for Shabbat. (It was great when we tasted it Thursday night, though.) Even a gluten-free guest at the table ate very well that weekend.
The most surprising part is that the cost of this "pinuk" is not what you would think. While it's difficult to compare apples to apples, Rami's cooking probably did not cost us any more than catering would have, and it's so much nicer to have home-cooked meals ... especially when we're not the ones cooking them :-). I would definitely consider this for another such special occasion, and would readily recommend it to you too.
