  I rode up there last summer; skipped camping in favor of hostel, so I can't help you with that. I can heartily recommend a place to stay if it's on your way: https://www.saltytowers.net Affordable rooms and the place is indescribably cool. Meat Cove at the northern end of the island is cool; scenery'a great, although there were quite a few people; not crowded, but it's not secluded. My approach is generally "zoom way in on google maps and take as many little roads as I can".
