Looking for bike shop recommendations! I want to get serious about biking as a hobby this summer, primarily for exercise over transportation. The only bikes I've ever owned were heavy, poorly-built department store bikes; I'm looking for something that actually feels good to ride instead of feeling like a chore.
I realize that you get what you pay for, so I'd be willing to drop up to $600 for a quality bike. My plan is to visit a bike shop and get fitted for the best bicycle possible.
That said, does anyone have any personal suggestions as to which shop I should visit? Any suggestions on types of bikes for me? Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated!

I've found a few good deals at [Orange cycle](http://www.orangecycle.com/specials/), and their advice/fitting has been pretty good. I've also picked up some bikes and equipment at [Performance Bike](http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/TopCategory_10052_10551_400001_-1_400001_Y), plus they have organized rides every Saturday morning and regularly scheduled free bike maintenance clinics (teaching, not free work).
