  OpenStreet Maps worked great for gps. For paper maps, we used the guia roja map for Mexico (not recommended) and several of the "International Travel Maps" for each individual country in CA. Some of them had decent coverage but eventually they fall apart. The Central America map like this was useless due to the scale: http://www.amazon.com/Central-America-Travel-International-Maps/dp/1553410645/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381940698&sr=1-1&keywords=international+travel+maps+central+america. For quality and rugged maps with good coverage, look into the Reisse "Know How" maps. http://www.reise-know-how.de/
