Any Santa Cruz locals with suggestions on cheap beach camping, non-tourist activities, and good food? I am headed down to Santa Cruz in the next couple of days and need a cheap place to sleep for one night. I'm looking for a safe place near the beach to camp out in the back of my car (free and preferable) or a good beach campground to roll out a tent.
What are some neat, non-touristy things to do in the Santa Cruz area?
And any fellow foodies with suggestions on local good eats would be much appreciated.

The Boardwalk thing can get a little touristy- But on Wednesdays I actually enjoy going there because they have free projection movies ON the beach. The show classics, and tomorrow they show the Princess Bride. I usually bring a few beers, sit on the beach with friends and watch the flick. Its also dollar ride night. http://beachboardwalk.com/movies/
