  There's a great NY/Italian place in the Westend called [Cardero Bottega](http://www.carderobottega.com/) on Cardero and Nelson. The sandwiches are amazing, not cheap ($8-9), but the place has character and the people who work there are friendly. It's a gem of the westend.
