  Hi It really depends how much you will be sending. In general it is more expensive to send money out of Israel than to receive. There will be two costs. one is sending funds, the other is the costs of currency conversion. 4% in general is highway robbery. However the figure can be misleading because if you are trying to send $100 than $4 is a bargain. You might find that change companies (Diclosure-I work for www.Isratransfer.com) have a higher minimum for sending funds to the US in order to continue to offer attractive pricing. You will probably be dealing with their customer support person, Uriah Mosby who is really helpful and on top of things. Set up isn't overly complicated. For those that do the atm method - for someone like me with a business I'm worried that mas hacnasa would see large sums of cash shekels going into my account and investigate me. Even if you can prove it was withdrawn from an overseas account you really don't want mas hacnasa checking up on you. They love fining people

  Neil Porter--Still unclear to me WHY you want to hold Euro in cash. The only situation I can see is if you want to travel to Europe. If you have a EUR account in any local bank, you can: 1)Transfer EUR anywhere in the world, via SWIFT, IBAN, or Cashier's Check. 2) Convert to NIS for local use, paying whatever the commission is (again--subject to negotiation!!) 3) Withdraw EUR cash, paying the exchange rate differential--as I wrote, should be no more than 3%--also subject to negotiation. I imagine that if I banked in the UK, where the local currency is Sterling, and wanted to draw Euro or US$ or SFR, or Yen--I'd pay a premium. Here, our local currency is the NIS. Want to withdraw any other currency--pay a premium. I believe IsraTransfer and similar services MUST transfer ONLY from your account abroad to your account here. Unless funds are coming from YOUR account, I don't think they can help. If it is YOUR account in Europe, ask them if they can draw the funds there, and hand you EUR in cash here. I doubt, but it's worth the phone call.

  If you transfer money...don't do it via the bank!!! I use a great service called Isra Transfer and pay a fraction of what the banks charge and it's done in days, not weeks. They are native English speakers and walk you through the process. You can reach them via their website www.isratransfer.com. Banks are ridiculous with commissions and can always be negotiated down.

Ronit Benarieh we - Isratransfer Ltd run a programme called smart pay whereby we can debit your account in the US (via ACH debit) and wire shekels to your Israel bank account. You therefore do not pay for an expensive international wire transfer or Israel receiving fees, the rates are super competitive (I don't think you will find better) the minimum transfer is $1,000. Good luck with everything.
