DIY Tree Removal Hi r/HomeImprovement
I found a lot of advice and thoughts about looking for tree removal services, but I have a sort of small Weeping Cherry tree in my back yard of Chicago which is in the dead center of the yard. It's a nice looking tree but it leaves little room for my kid to play and even obstructs the entryway to my back deck. I don't know what the previous owner was thinking.

I got a quote of about $500 to have it removed. Then I was thinking it might not be too hard to remove my self with a good saw and an open weekend. My only concern is removing the stump. The tree removal guys said they would use the trunk as leverage to dig out the roots.
Is digging out the roots a necessary step? Does anyone have any advice for this or can point me to some good literature/videos?

You don't necessarily have to dig out the roots. Leaving a stump in the ground won't hurt anything. You may also be able to rent a stump grinder and do it yourself or just have a tree service quote the stump to grind after the fact. [Tree Service Buffalo, NY](https://alstreecare.com)
