I've chosen a pretty big national one, but I'd like to split the donation with a smaller local NYC charity where it could really count. A lot of smaller direct-service nonprofits can get looked over, even though they're doing amazing and impactful work. Does anyone have any recommendations for NYC based charities that could really use it, and are effective organizations? My first thought was homeless shelters or domestic violence shelters. But please, if you know of any great charities for any cause, let me know! Unfortunately my own knowledge isn't enough and I really wanna make a good decision, so I'm throwing it out to reddit for some ideas. Thanks!

I am wondering if there is anywhere around NYC where you can either play with or volunteer to work with animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, politicians, etc.). I have heard of a few programs where you work at kennels and such, but it seems like they are mostly looking for foster homes or temp homes, which we can't do.   Anjellicle Cats has adoption events every weekend (One on E. 86 th and one on 100 th and Colombus) where you can meet some of their cats in person. Some of their cats are already in foster homes, so you get an idea of how they behave in a home setting . http://www.anjelliclecats.com/
