  Resolution. USFamily.net tech support emailed me to say that I was the one who shut off the spam filter over a year ago. Silly me. Considering I have no clue how to complete that procedure, I don't think I'm the one who did it. But again, I'm just the silly customer.

  I think there are no truly good options, but you can get DSL separately with no telephone service. If you don't want to have to deal directly with Century Link you can still get the DSL through other companies such as Velocity Telephone/USfamily.net. There are probably others, but this is who I use. Their rates are slightly better than Century Link's and they have better customer service. (I got their VOIP telephone service at just $5 more per month). Our neighborhood has the fiber optic cable DSL. http://www.velocitytelephone.com/residential/residential.php

  I use usfamily.net DSL and they are pretty reliable and less expensive. But any DSL here uses Century Link's phone lines, including this one. http://www.usfamily.net/dsl.html
