I need your help. Where would you recommend to camp and ride for 5-7 days in Oklahoma? May be 5-7 trailers and need electric and water. Also what time of the year is the best time to go?

We really like this place south east of Fort Smith, AR. Idlenook is run by a guy who has always trail ridden and led many trail rides. The horses have large covered pens. Great riding. Nice community building with wood heat, appliances, showers, etc. VERY nice people. http://idlenook.com/

I agree with Vickie Taylor. If you have gaited horses with a full week you will be re-riding some trails unless you pick cedar lake or horse heaven or some other location with at least 70 plus miles of trail. Cedar Lake and Horse Heaven are in the same mountains cedar lake is to the east end and Horse heaven is on the west end. Only other difference is Cedar Lake is federal campground and Horse heaven is private. I have never camped at horse heaven but I suspect they would cater to your every need in order to get repeat business. They also have some covered pens I understand. James Jim, my friend and I are thinking about going a couple days to Idlenook as it is not too far from Cedar Lake and check it out. The advantage with Cedar Lake is if you have a golden pass the campsite cost is $11 per night, $17 w/o pass. Idle nook is $25 per night but since it is private the accomodations and treatment may be worth the extra cost.
James J. replied:
Idle nook is dog friendly. Cedar Lake is not. That's a biggie with us. Cedar Lake used to be more relaxed. Owan was one of the rangers. He had common sense. Now, they act like a state organization -- which they are. Everyone has their favorites. Cedar Lake is on our list. We've been going to Horse Heaven since the day they first opened the doors. Their pens are uncovered, but you could rent stalls in their Barnmaster Barn if needed. I don't know the cost. They also have some great cabins that come with sheltered horse stalls. Although the Horse Heave campground is private, you will ride entirely on government land.
James J. replied:
BTW, both Idle Nook and Horse Heaven have private ponds stocked with fish. Since they're private, you wouldn't need a fishing license. Cedar Lake, of course, has a lake but you need an OK license.
Larry H. replied:
I always take my dog to Cedar Lake. I keep him on a leash in camp and he runs with me on the trails. The folks that run Idle Nook over in Arkansas are really great people. You would probably enjoy either place.
