After researching other methods, this seems like it will be the most reliable for the money. for around $15 you get 100 plugs and each plug produces more than once a season for several years once established...We plan on making extras and giving some away, selling some and maybe establishing some in good places to naturalize in our woods. With the plugs, you just drill holes hammer in the plugs with a mallet and seal with wax. We are very excited to get the fresh mushrooms :) also I have read that the nutrient content of mushrooms degrades quickly after picking, so they are one of the foods that are much better for you fresh. Good Luck!Rob H. replied:I would recommend starting with oysters and winecap stropharia (also called giant stropharia, king stropharia, stropharia rugoso-annulata, etc.). The oysters are easy to grow indoors on coffee grounds, rolls of paper towel or toilet paper, etc. I haven't grown them outdoors, but I know it's easy. The stropharia are incredibly easy to grow in beds of wood chips outdoors. Simply lay down 4"-6" of hardwood wood chips. If you look online you can find a list of acceptable woods. If you're growing on a lawn lay down cardboard first. After you lay down the initial 4"-6" of chips scatter the sawdust spawn evenly over the area. Typically one package is enough to do 50 sq ft. Then top it off with 2"-4" of woodchips and water it. They're sun tolerant, but do better in part shade. I've put stropharia beds in any spot around my house that has too poor soil or not enough sun to plant garden beds. You'll notice that you can get the mushroom spawn grown on different media. You'll want spawn, not spores. Spores are trickier to get started with. For inoculating outdoors you'll want sawdust spawn. The grain spawn is too inviting for birds and rodents, but they don't bother with the sawdust. I'm not a fan of the Fungi Perfecti website and I found the prices better at Field and Forest when I last priced things out. I would encourage you to buy one bag of stropharia sawdust spawn, start your bed, and in a couple of months start more beds by digging up a little of the inoculated wood chips at the edge of the bed you prepared earlier. You can save a lot on spawn that way. I set mine up last June and was rewarded with about 15 lbs of mushrooms in the fall, and likely greater harvests this spring and fall. Enjoy, growing mushrooms is fun!
