However for the time being I am looking for a GPS navigation software I can run on my Windows 8.1 tablet for my UK travels that I can later expand for European, African and Australian travels.   I use Garmin GPSs (handheld GPSMap 60Cx and a regular vehicle GPS). I have Garmin's Basecamp (which is free) installed on my laptops (Windows 7, but I expect Windows 8 will work too) and transfer GPS tracks and waypoints between each. I download free maps for both the GPS units and the laptops from here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

  Take a look at Samsung phone and OpenStreetMap with downloaded maps. Maybe TOMTOM if you want to pay for the software not sure of African coverage with the maps.

  The great thing with OpenStreetMap is you can add to the map by tracing features from available satelite images in the OSM editor. This is helpful if major features are missing from the map. However, you should revisit these edits once you have confirmed arrangements on the ground. Don't edit info already on the map unless you have first hand knowledge of current actual conditions on the ground. Bear in mind that a lot of the available satelite imagery is over 2 year's old.

  I guess the older GPS units might have an issue with how the pages are rendered but I shouldn't think they all suffer. The maps are not a problem. Is Japan on http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl ?

  If I was going (I have an Etrex30) I would get a map from here http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ these will not cause any problem. They may not be as detailed as the "official" local mapping (e.g. they're not as detailed as a UK OS map), but they're fine for caching. Whatever problem you've read of won't be caused by these maps.
