  Slightly off - topic but I have a friend in Leicestershire who is expecting her first baby in January. She was planning on using a doula but has been let down. Does anyone know anyone who might be able to help? She's going to be a single mum and there's a significant chance she won't have a birth partner (I'd do it in a heartbeat but I live 300 miles away).

Well done Mothercare for fuelling the small mindedness of Briti sh parents, too blinded by the 'let's see birth as a medical emergency' attitude to see that it could be all so different! Doulas are available for all regardless of class, ethnicity or wealth. Whether you have a vaginal birth or a c section, she'll be with you every step of the way. From the first contraction till your babies safe in your arms. You may regret many things during your labour but hiring a doula is never one of them www.doula.org.uk
