She likes her current OB, and is not sure if she should or can (based on her insurance) switch to a midwife/birth center. Does anyone know of a link or resource for a list of questions to ask OBs to determine if they are natural birth friendly?

What are their differing birth philosophies? What percentage of their patient’s births does your provider attend? What is the most common choice for pain relief in the practice? Does the practice allow laboring in water, birth stools, birth balls, freedom of movement, eating and drinking during labor, etc.? If induction is needed, what are my options other than Pitocin? How often are doulas present for births? What is the policy for fetal monitoring? What percentage of women have natural, spontaneous childbirth?   Posting for someone else (she hasn't announced her pregnancy yet, and some this is an open group didn't want to disclose yet) if anyone here can help out I'll get her in touch with you! :-) Thanks ladies! "We just found out we are expecting #2, but shhh no one knows. This one was a surprise after an infertility battle with #1. I desperately wanted a natural birth with my son. I did Hypnobabies and loved it. I was doing awesome for the 8 hours I was at home but when I started vomitting and shaking I mistakenly thought I was in transition and went to the hospital. It was all down hill from there. I was only dilated to 3 and stuck in triage for 10 hours bc the hospital was full. I lost all concentration being poked and prodded at and opted for an epi. My labor ended up being 23 hrs total. So my 2 questions are this, 1. I would like to have a doula this time, but being a one income household, I'm not sure I can afford one. How much do they cost? Is there a possibility of finding a doula in training for cheap or free? 2. Despite my experience, I really liked St. Marys bc they seemed a bit more natural minded than some however, our insurance changed to BCBS Select and we can no longer use Tenova. I have to switch OBs. Any reccomendations on natural friendly doctors that don't deliver at tennova? I'd love to see a midwife but insurance won't cover it. And I'd prefer to be in a hospital setting just in case. Sorry so long, thanks ladies."

  I think she would love getting your care with the midwives at Lisa Ross even if she decided on delivering at the hospital. While it would be an OB that delivered her, they are very natural friendly especially if you are coming over from LR and who knows she might just decide to stay there! Plus they will be a huge help to prepare her for natural delivery. They accept BCBS insurance. Also, we have a couple doulas in training currently so we might have some options. www.openheartdoula.com
