  Does anyone have any good raccoon deterrent tactics? I have tried everything - but raccoons seem determined to treat my high traffic balcony, and entrance to my home, as their toilet. It's disgusting and very upsetting. I've had pest control people come out - who told me they could make a small fortune catching and releasing my unwanted neighbours - but can only legally release them a kilometer so they will just come back and I'll be out of money. Mothballs, Irish spring soap, vinegar, cloves, every kind of pepper. This has all been tried. Please, help!

  The ONLY thing that kept them off our new grass was when I laid down plastic chicken wire...apparently raccoons don't like walking on it. I know this sounds stupid on a balcony, but it might be worth the investment as a deterrent. Raccoons also used to use our upper balcony as a toilet, and the only thing that worked was installing steel or aluminum flashing on the wooden posts and at the sides of the deck, so they couldn't get a foothold and climb up and in (it is slippery). I measured the posts and sides, sketched them out, and went to Bitplus roofing supplies on Carlaw to cut and bend the pieces. When I was there last year, I was told one of their clients has a job where ALL he does is install metal caps, siding, etc. to keep raccoons from entering chimneys, stay off roofs, etc. -- it is a real problem. http://www.bitplus.ca/sheet-metal/
